Gynaecological Emergencies
What to do in a gynaecological or obstetric emergency, when to call emergency services and the essential numbers
In case of a life-threatening emergency, call immediately:
When to call emergency services?
Call 15 (SAMU) or 112 in the following situations
Heavy genital bleeding (significant bleeding outside of periods or after a gynaecological procedure)
Intense and sudden pelvic pain, especially if one-sided (suspected ovarian torsion or ectopic pregnancy)
Fever above 38.5 °C with pelvic pain (suspected pelvic infection)
Intense abdominal pain with faintness, dizziness or loss of consciousness
Heavy bleeding after a gynaecological procedure
Suspected ruptured ovarian cyst with acute pain
Chronic pelvic pain that has suddenly and severely worsened
Any unusual or worrying symptom after gynaecological surgery
What to do while waiting?
While waiting for emergency services to arrive, follow these guidelines
Stay calm and lie down
Make yourself comfortable. Always inform the medical team of your gynaecological or surgical history.
Do not eat or drink anything
In the event of urgent surgery, it is important to be fasting.
Note your symptoms
Time of onset, pain intensity, amount of bleeding — this information will be valuable for the medical team.
Prepare your documents
Carte Vitale, insurance card, recent test results, operative reports and current prescriptions.
Do not take any medication
Unless advised by a doctor, avoid self-medication — in particular aspirin, which can worsen bleeding.
Call a trusted person
If possible, ask a family member or friend to accompany you for transport and support.
